What's the difference between a "converter" and, say, an actual module
to use WikiCreole?

Or to phrase this a different way, if this was a programming language
we might be able to define parsers etc. as re-usable components? For
people who currently write wikis, is there a standard architecture for
the conversion? What are the typical component modules of wiki-markup
handling?

In a program I'm currently working on (which is not a wiki, but
inspired by some aspects of wiki) I have a hierarchical architecture
of "modes" (each is a Python class)

Each mode looks for certain patterns in a "source" line, and does
something with it. Some modes, however are defined as sub-modes of
other modes, and if they don't find any recognisable pattern, they
pass the line up to their parent mode to handle.

If other authors here are using this kind of architecture it may be
possible to define Creole as one such mode, which can be slotted into
a context where there are other modes to handle the specific dialect
of the wiki.
