[wiki-standards] Escaping free-standing URLs

By what method can one distinguish between escaping a free standing URL like:

  ~http://www.yahoo.com/

and yet properly interpret the following:

  bogus://this should be italic//

This seems basically impossible to me.

Perhaps URLs should be escaped like:

  http:~//www.yahoo.com/
